Student Achievement and the Assessment & Evaluation Policy at The Educators Academy

At The Educators Academy, our Assessment and Evaluation Policy is aligned with the Ontario Ministry of Education’s guidelines and reflects our commitment to supporting every student’s academic success. The primary goal of assessment is to improve student learning by collecting meaningful data about how well students are meeting curriculum expectations in their courses.

Types of Assessment

We employ a balanced approach to assessment that includes:

  • Assessment for Learning
Teachers use this type of assessment to provide descriptive feedback and guidance that supports continuous improvement. It helps identify a student’s strengths and areas for development throughout the learning process.

  • Assessment as Learning
This promotes student independence. Students are encouraged to set goals, monitor their progress, and reflect on their learning with support from teachers.

  • Assessment of Learning (Summative Assessment)
Summative assessments take place at the end of instructional units and are used to determine students’ final grades based on their overall performance.

Our strategy also includes ongoing pre-assessments and formative evaluations to guide instruction and provide actionable feedback.

Reporting Student Achievement

Student achievement is communicated formally through the Provincial Report Card, which documents the student’s progress in meeting curriculum expectations and includes comments on strengths, next steps, and learning skills.

Final Grades are determined as follows:

  • 70% Term Work: Evaluations conducted throughout the course measuring consistent achievement.

  • 30% Final Evaluation: May include a final exam, performance task, presentation, or other summative assessments depending on the course.

Note: Students must achieve a minimum of 50% to earn credit for a course.

At the start of each course, students receive a course outline detailing the expectations, assessment methods, and breakdown of the 70/30 evaluation structure.

Course Evaluation Framework

All subjects at The Educators Academy are assessed across four key areas:

  • Knowledge and Understanding

  • Thinking and Investigation

  • Communication

  • Application

The final evaluation (30%) includes subject-specific summative tasks and may or may not involve an examination, as determined by course requirements.

Second Chance Policy

The Educators Academy supports the belief that learning is a process. Students may be given additional opportunities to demonstrate their learning if their initial attempt does not reflect their potential. This is at the discretion of the teacher, based on professional judgment and student engagement.

Course Repetition Policy

When a course is repeated:

  • Only one credit will be granted.

  • In Grades 11 and 12, the higher grade is used in calculating averages, but both attempts are recorded on the Ontario Student Transcript with the lower mark indicated by an “R”.

Reporting Process

Two report cards are issued per course:

  • Midterm Report: Highlights initial progress and learning skills.

  • Final Report: Provides the final grade and evaluates growth in learning skills and work habits.

Learning Skills and Work Habits

Teachers assess the following learning skills and work habits, which are reported separately from academic grades:

  • Responsibility: Completes tasks, meets deadlines, and manages behavior effectively.

  • Organization: Plans, prioritizes, and uses time and resources wisely.

  • Independent Work: Demonstrates initiative and follows directions with minimal supervision.

  • Collaboration: Works effectively with others, values diverse perspectives, and resolves conflicts constructively.

  • Initiative: Takes ownership of learning, seeks new opportunities, and demonstrates creativity.

  • Self-Regulation: Sets goals, reflects on progress, and perseveres through challenges.
